Torano family celebrates 90th continuous year in tobacco

The Torano premium cigar business began in 1916 when Don Santiago Torano emigrated from Spain to Cuba. “My great-grandfather planted the seeds not only of tobacco, but also of a reputation for quality, a rich history and a world-respected name,” said company President Charlie Torano. The company passed to his grandfather, Carlos, and holdings grew to 17 tobacco farms when the family was forced to flee under Castro, ultimately establishing itself in the Dominican Republic. He died in 1970 in his tobacco barn.

The Torano Family keeps Carlos’ memory alive by releasing limited-edition tribute cigars. Two have been released, with more to come.

“My father, also named Carlos, guided the company through the succeeding 25 years to become one of the largest private label manufacturers of premium cigars,” Torano said.

The family continues to make cigars for some of the most respected brands today, as well as their own consistently top-rated brands, including Exodus 1959 and Exodus Silver, Reserva Selecta, Signature Collection, 1916 Cameroon and Casa Torano. They also own their own factories in Honduras and Nicaragua.

Charlie Torano became president last year. His father, Carlos, is now chairman of the board.

The company plans to release a new cigar celebrating its 90th. “We will soon introduce a new cigar, the Noventa (90 in Spanish), which also is unique in that its blend will be Nicaraguan leaf,” Torano said. “In the Torano tradition, this cigar promises to be nothing less than spectacular.”TR
